Children for the responsible way of animal keeping

This is the 10th season for this program called childrensection. In year 2016/ 17 we have 177 members. The aim of this program is that the children will monthly meet  us so we will give them lectures and tell our experiences concerning the responsible animal keeping, animal rights and of course about the animals.  These sessions can build a stronger relation and also the schools join to other different programs of ours. This program takes 4 years for schools and 3 years for kindergartens. So for that child who takes all the 4 years can enjoy 32 interesting lectures.

The lectures contain a power point presentation or some films beside of it there are games and live animals to make the lesson interesting . At the end the children got homework or a magazine, pictures or games. The lectures held by Gyöngyi Krepsz zoologist and other different lecturers.

In the year 2016/ 17 schools Zentai and Waldorf joined as a new member. Due to the high number of children we formed two groups. The situation in the Széna tér school is not different. They joined many years ago and they have new kids every year. The Teleki-Sziget school has also joined years ago.

In October we also had many interesting topics.

In the Teleki-Sziget school the topic was the life in the aquarium:

The children learnt how to install an aquarium and how to take care of its residents. They learnt about those species what can keep easiest and they also learnt about how to design a sea aquarium too. The law controls the size of the aquarium of certain species and it is also saying that is not allowed to use sphere shaped aquariums (if you have one you can plant something in it, looks nice!). In order to understand the importance of this we played a game with the children. The kids were happily played fish for a moment and others were glad to pretend that they are the aquarium. They figured out that there is impossible to orientate in a sphere shaped and in the other hand there are great orientation points in an angular tank. We pointed out that the most important is always to pay attention for the creatures' claims.

In the Waldorf school the topic was the language, body language and behavior of a dog:

WALDORF iskola

Dolly and Mimi represented the dogs and showed us their communication. The kids were charmed by the two smart and well-trained dogs and they could learn the importance of the smell, body language and sounds. By petting the dogs they could also learn the proper way how to get close to them. After they heard about their training and about the positive reinforcement, the children could also practice the right way to give treats for a dog.

In the two groups of school of Széna tér the topic was the exotic pets:

School in SZÉNA square, group I.

The children could learn that these animals also require the same treatment and care just like a dog. They have special needs concerning living space, food and veterinary care. They got know a spider and learnt that spiders have different living spaces. Some of them live on the ground, some live in holes and some live in trees. Very important to know the special needs and care of the animal anyway it won't have a long lifespan.

They also learnt about zoos and their tasks. The children enjoyed a lot the pictures and the game to recognize them. For many of them it was the very first time to hear about wild dogs or mole-rat. And many kids surprised when they get know about the cougar cub has spots and when it's adult it doesn't have any.

At first everybody picked an animal and told its name and if it's living at night time or at the daylight. Everybody knew about the bat and owl that they live a nightlife but about the moth and raccoon nobody knew. They have also learnt about the wolverine that it doesn't care if it is daylight or night.

School in SZÉNA square, group II.

In the next game they had to decide where is the living area of a certain species. Hungary? Or Asia? Maybe Africa or Australia? The wombat, platypus, rhea  are OK not to know but someone have never heard about antelopes and koalas. At the end they have got a quiz about the international illegal animal trade.

In the school of Zentai street the topic was also the language, body language and behavior of a dog:

School in ZENTAI street

Our special guest was Viktória Hofman who is a dog trainee at Dog Garden. Her helper were Csúzli and Koni. These doggies have two different kind of personalities so they could easily show the different behaviors. Here we talked too about the importance of smell, body language and sounds. The children could see how dogs learn and they could also try the positive reinforcement and how to give treats for a dog. At the end every children had to fill a quiz.

We'll be back in November with other interesting topics!
